This past week in Chennai, India, members of the HanAra team participated in the Automation Expo2023 trade show. In its 16th year, the trade show brought together experts from across India and beyond to celebrate the advancements made in the industrial automation sphere. To continue our conversations at the conference, we’re sharing three critical tips for improved automation.

3 Industrial Automation Principles

Automation allows organizations to use technology to complete repetitive or defined actions in a process. As a result, automating activities can save time, reduce risk, and improve safety. With these benefits, it is no surprise that the industrial industry has accepted and implemented automation practices throughout operations.

1. Plan & Document

An essential step, like any business strategy, is to plan and document the automation processes and activities properly. Since automation is an ongoing effort and there continue to be advancements made in technology, your automation strategy will change and evolve. Properly planning for current needs and future growth will help reduce the risk of creating a franken-system that is difficult to manage and maintain. Documentation also serves as an essential foundation for any automation practice to record what an organization did for future reference and training.

2. Evaluate & Implement

Automation practices must provide value. The value can be monetary, time, safety, and many other factors. For these numerous reasons, it is no surprise that automation initiatives are growing. But make sure to weed out the automation elements for automation’s sake. An excellent way to do this is to discuss it with all layers of the organization. An organization’s different perspectives and knowledge will help provide a more robust view of what is and is not needed. And when you have identified a beneficial automation activity, implement it!

3. Train & Verify

After implementation (and even before and during), it is essential to properly train members about the automation initiatives and the impact it has on their day-to-day. Training will help ensure alignment. During the training stage, there is the possibility to identify ways to amplify the automation benefits and reduce the risk of negating these same benefits. And like any business strategy, it is vital to continue to verify the application and results and make changes and updates as necessary.
